Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin. It is a pregnancy hormone, produced by the placenta to maintain pregnancy. It is given to mature the eggs and time the egg collection in IVF cycles

A condition in which women develop excessive facial and body hair with a male pattern distribution.
HMG
Human Menopausal Gonadotrophin. It is a combination of FSH and LH and is produced using human menopausal urine. It is given to produce more eggs in an IVF cycle

A chemical produced by a gland which controls the function of another organ
HRT
Hormone Replacement Therapy as a result of falling oestrogen levels around and after the menopause. It is prescribed to women with symptoms such as hot flushes and vaginal dryness or where there is a risk of osteoporosis. It can be given as tablets or a skin patch together with progesterone to protect the endometrium. Testosterone is given to men if they have symptoms of testosterone deficiency
HSG
Hystero-salpingography. An out-patient test (X-ray test) used to check whether fallopian tubes are open.
HycoSy
Hysterocontrastsonography. An out-patient tubal ultrasound test used to check whether the fallopian tubes are open.

Hydatidiform mole
A collection of fluid filled sacs that result from swelling of placental tissue leading to the death of the embryo. A malignant condition called Choriocarcinoma may rarely develop up to two years after its removal.

Fallopian tube filled with fluid. It generally indicates previous inflammation of tube resulting in its damage

Hysterectomy
Surgical removal of uterus. It could be carried out either through the vagina or the abdomen
Hysteroscopy
A procedure to look into the cavity of womb through a fibreoptic telescope. It could be performed under local anaesthetic as an outpatient procedure. An operating hysteroscope has an extra channel for performing procedures such as the removal of fibroids.
