M2 Oocyte
A ripe or mature egg which has completed meiotic two phase of cell division. Only those eggs that are M2 are suitable for ICSI procedure. Immature eggs are not suitable for injection

A cancerous growth which can spread by means of the blood stream in the lymphatic system is described as malignant
Mammogram
An X ray examination of breasts. It is offered to women over 50 to screen for breast cancer and for any woman who has a breast lump or nipple discharge.
MAR Test
Mixed Anti-Globulin Reaction Test, a laboratory test used to detect clumping of sperm
Menogon
A brand name for Human Menopausal Gonadotrophin (HMG).It is a fertility drug given as an intramuscular injection
Menopause
It marks the end of monthly periods. The average age of menopause is 51 years.
Menopur
It is a brand name for HMG. This injection is given as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin)
Menorrhagia
Regular but prolonged and heavy menstrual flow
Menstrual cycle
Menstrual cycle is calculated from the first day of one period to the first day of the next period. The average length of menstrual cycle is 28 days but it can vary between 25 to 35 days. Menstrual cycles begin at menarche and end with menopause. Having periods does mean ovulation is taking place.
Menstrual period
Monthly bleeding associated with shedding of the endometrium. Normally lasts 5 days with the loss 280ml (cupful).
MESA
Micro-epididymal sperm aspiration. An out-patient procedure performed under local anaesthetic to collect sperm from the tube.
Metformin
It is a tablet given to control diabetes. It has been recently used to reduce insulin resistance in women with PCOS. It helps women to lose weight, regularise menstruation and facilitate ovulation
Micromanipulation
Laboratory procedure in which a single sperm is injected into the egg to facilitate fertilisation process. It is also called intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection

Miscarriage
A pregnancy that ends spontaneously before 24 weeks of pregnancy.
Missed miscarriage
It is an ultrasound scan diagnosis where the embryonic or fetal sac shows a dead embryo or fetus before 20 weeks of gestation, in the absence of bleeding or other clinical symptoms of miscarriage
Morula
An early stage of a developing embryo (around day 4) consisting of a solid ball of cells. It is a stage before blastocyst.
Motility
Movement of sperm during microscopic examination of sperm is described as motility. The speed and direction of sperm movement is described as progressive motility
MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging. This is used to provide detailed anatomical images of internal anatomy. It is more expensive than ultrasound and requires the patient to lie in a cylinder but the soft tissue differentiation is superior to ultrasound.

Multifollicular ovary
An ovary that contains a lot of follicles (more than the normal ovary)) without the dense central tissue making it different to a polycystic ovary. It is seen in women with anorexia nervosa, at the menarche and after cessation of oral contraceptives.
Multiparous
The term used to describe a woman who has previously had children
Multiple pregnancy
A pregnancy with two or more fetuses in the same woman at the same time. Fertility treatments producing and releasing more eggs or transferring more embryos could lead to multiple pregnancies. It is therefore important that treatments are carried out under the supervision of a specialist
Myomectomy
Surgical procedure performed to remove uterine fibroids usually if the woman has completed her family. It could be performed through a key-hole (laparoscopy) operation or an open abdominal operation
